The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood who strives valiantly who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming but who does actually strive to do the deeds who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions who s pends himself in a worthy cause who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.Have you been daring greatly lately? It would be great if you could help usout.Defeated, I gave in. Performing in a two act ballet to the music of Tchaikovsky, in front of hundreds of people, had not been on my bucket list. Yet, something told me to do it anyway. To step outside my comfort zone.Margie Warrell,the author of the bookStop Playing Safe,wrote an article in Forbes magazine entitledWhy Getting Comfortable With Discomfort is Crucial to Success.Heres an excerptOnly in giving up the security of the known, can we create new opportunity, build capability and grow influence.When we do hard things, we grow. When we fail, we grow. When we strive to be braver in our lives, fear loosens its hold on us.Most of the breakthroughs in my life happened after I stepped outside my comfort zone. I know that sounds like a cheap self help slogan, but its true.Despite my fear of flying, I got on a tuch and flew to Idaho. Because I wanted to study landscape painting with a ma ster artist. That decision changed my life and artistic trajectory.Later on, I took multiple connecting flights in order to study writing with a successful author in Franklin, Tennessee.I felt discomfort on those flights. They were bumpy, and my mind played all kinds of disaster scenarios over and over.But man, did I learn a great deal about writing on that trip.Those things thathurtThere were other ventures I risked trying, only to fail at. The failure hurt. But as Benjamin Franklin wroteThose things that hurt, instruct.The failures corrected my course. They helped lead me closer to my true self.You need to embrace discomfort if you want to grow. As the old saying goesDo what youve always done, get what youve alwaysgot.Not that you should be reckless. Thats why its called calculated risks. One needs to weigh all the available facts, including the potential benefits versus consequences. In the end, sometimes you just have to dive in.Heres the other thing. People dont really care tha t much. A public failure may be agonizing to you, but its a brief amusement to others.People are largely interested in themselves. Their own lives and pursuits. We tend to exaggerate the interest others have in our efforts, successes, and failures.The disinterest of others actually frees us. We can experiment, explore and sometimes stumble. In the process, we become more impervious to failure. Less fragile.Thats where growth happens.Through the months of Nutcracker rehearsals, there were days I regretted the whole venture. The rehearsals stole time from my personal pursuits, but I soldiered on.Applause and curtainsOn opening night the District Attorney and I donned our silly outfits. We even helped with each others stage makeup. The curtains went up, we hit the stage and performed to the best of our ability.The professional dancers were amazing. The crowd applauded and roared with approval. Afterward, backstage, there were flowers and champagne. The District Attorney smiled at me an d said, See, I told you. Something to check off your bucket listA few years later that same District Attorney was struck with an aggressive cancer. He fought bravely and with dignity. But too soon, at 57 years of age, he left the stage of life.The funeral was something to behold. There were police officers, firefighters, motorcades, flags, judges and even the Attorney General for the State of California.As the speakers celebrated this good mans life, I was reminiscing about our night at the Nutcracker. The laughs we had and memories made.Thank God I stepped outside my comfort zone.So how about you? Are you ready to think differently about discomfort? Are you prepared to find out what youre made of? How to Handle Being More Qualified Than Your Boss - The MuseHow to Handle Being More Qualified Than Your Boss Over drinks a few weeks ago, a good friend vented to me about herbeibei job. After several minutes of trying to articulate exactly what she wanted to say, she blurted out, Bottom line I shouldnt be working for my supervisor. He should be working for me. Yes, its quite the bold statement, but after a few frustrating weeks, it was how she felt. And I dont think shes alone. Ive definitely had moments in which I felt similarly- moments in which my supervisor was ill-equipped to lead my team in the direction we needed to go. If you feel this way, its not fun. But diminishing your bosss real strengths, overreacting to his errors, and resisting or resenting his authority are self-inflicted career problems, says Judith Sills, psychologist and author of Excess Baggage Getting Out of Your Own Way. You do need to be learning something in your job. You do need to feel personally valued. When you distort your boss in a negative direction, you make both less likely.So, before you throw in the towel or demand change, there are three things you should do first to better the situation. Because the real bottom line is that if you continue to think this way, youll just enter into a downward spiral that gets harder and harder to recover from.1. Remember That Your Manager Is Just That- a ManagerLets say your supervisors in charge of four people. She is not the sum of the four of you. She cant (and wont) know every single thing each of you knows. If she did, shed be Superwoman. And she also may not need you (or the others) at all. Rather, your supervisor has a much different type of responsibility on her plate- managing you and your teammates. In this type of role, shes supposed to be able to see the big picture, hilfe you, and guide you. According to Linda A. Hill and Kent Lineback, co-authors of Being the Boss Three Imperatives for Becoming a Great Leader, a manager needs to know enough to understand the work, enough to be able to make good judgments about it, enough to understand the common hurdles, and enough to coach or find help for those she manages when they struggle with problems. So yes, youre going to need to bring her up to speed sometimes so she can adequately assist you. If youre frustrated because she doesnt know every microscopic detail, perhaps you need to give her a break and remember shes human. However, if find yourself constantly repeating things to her, asking for guidance and receiving none, or being asked for advice on every decision she has to make, then, yep- maybe she isnt quite as qualified as she should be.2. Reevaluate Where You StandEven if you determine the individual you report to should, in fact, not be in the role hes in, that doesnt mean youre fit for it either (at least not yet, anyway). Take a step back and look at your current situation. How are you performing at your job? What was your last performance review lik e? Ask yourself if youre genuinely smarter than your manager, or if its possible that youre more qualified in some areas but not others, suggests Amy Gallo, contributing editor to Harvard Business Review and author of HBR Guide to Managing People at Work. Its awfully hypocritical to criticize others if youre not doing what it takes to do your job as well as possible. Yes, its hard to provide a completely objective review on your own performance, so this is a great opportunity to ask for input from others (even if its not annual review time). You can start with your director, as thats a more natural and common scenario, but dont stop there. Ask others you work with, too. Soliciting feedback from your colleagues may seem like a scary endeavor, says Muse writer Jennifer Winter, but with enough time, patience, and planning, youll platzdeckchen yourself- and your colleagues- up for success with open, honest, real-time, feedback. It may be just the reality check that says, Hey- he may not be the best fit to lead us, but I still have room for improvement, too. And then? Work on those areas that need it most.3. Identify the Gaps and Fill ThemInstead of whining about what the leader of your team lacks, do what you can to fill in those gaps. Because, as Gallo says, Theres no reason not to be generous. If your boss is successful, theres a greater chance youll be successful too. Lets say youre part of your companys marketing department, and the creative director has zero Photoshop skills. While she has a great vision, its frustrating because it limits her capability to jump in and cover when youre gone, as well as her ability to help you when youre experiencing difficulty with the program.But, rather than blabbing to the entire office about how incompetent she is, you can take action. First, make sure youre up-to-date with the product (because- gasp- there might be something you dont know, either). Then, offer to train her and your co-workers. Sure, itll probably rub her the wrong way if you say, Hi. Youre pretty horrible at this and its ruining my life. Let me help you. A better approach would be something like this I just took a refresher course on Photoshop. In the next team meeting, can I review what Ive learned? Not only does this show initiative, but it also provides you the opportunity to learn new skills, gain experience in training others, and add both to your resume. (Which never hurts, right?) And maybe- just maybe- your boss will pay attention and increase her skill set, too. Its can be exasperating to report to someone who, well, really isnt that great at his or her job. And the truth is, you probably cant stomp around and request she be replaced ASAP (without repercussions). Instead, you should try to change your perspective and focus on what you can change. After all- if you eventually do want land a promotion at this company or even leave for a position at another company, learning how to handle challenging situations professionally is key to anything you do next. Common responses include doctor, lawyer, police officer, teacher, actor, and astronaut. If youd posed that question to me when I was five, I would have stood tall and said firefighter. As a ten-year-old, I wouldve told you a pilot, and at 15, Id have said taxi driver. By the time I was 20, I wanted to be a news anchor. At no point in my formative years did I envision doing what I ended up doing working over a decade in schlussverkauf helping a Fortune 500 company exceed its revenue goals. Nor could Ive imagined myself eventually transitioning into an executive recruiter and finding my lifes passion leading individuals to great career opportunities.As we grow up, we begin to think about adult things like financial prosperity, job security, and social status, letting the fantasy jobs of our youth fall by the w ayside. We consider educational requirements, industry outlook, and work-life balance too as we embark on an actual career path. As a result, many of us end up in jobs where we watch the clock, complain about our bosses, vent about our work demands, and live for 500 on Fridays.But, it doesnt have to be like that. Getting stuck in a work rut doesnt mean you need to quit your job and set off for a year-long trip around the world to get back to the basics of who you are and what makes you happy. There are tons of ways you can make your day-to-day routine more enjoyable- maybe even captivating at times- if you learn how to capitalize on the value inherent in your current role. Start doing that by asking yourself these four questions1. What Are You Good at? Bad At?Its common for businesses to routinely conduct SWOT analyses strengths (internal), weaknesses (internal), opportunities (external), and threats (external). Conduct a personal SWOT analysis, beginning with evaluating your streng ths. In which areas do you thrive? What makes you unique and sets you apart from your peers? When you receive positive feedback, what abilities and characteristics are often mentioned? Do what you can to hone in on these skills. If you work in a company that encourages individual employee growth, speak to your manager about ways that you can begin incorporating your areas of expertise into your routine more. Next, take a look at your weaknesses. Put some thought into the tasks that cause you discomfort, the things that you actively avoid, or that often seem to accompany procrastination. While youll never excel at everything you do, you can actively improve in many places if you put the effort into it. There are so many ways to learn now (from your couch at home) that you dont have too many excuses for not at least trying. Focus externally when evaluating threats and opportunities. Develop opportunities as a means to overcome threats. For example, you might perceive your boss retirin g as a threat, but if you take the opportunity to develop a strong relationship with your new manager, who knows what exciting things are ahead of you. Recognize your shortcomings and what makes you feel anxious or threatened- but rather than dwell on them, find a way to overcome them in a way thatll benefit you in the long run.2. What Gets You Revved Up?Think back on those moments at work when you felt a jolt of excitement. Even if that spark was brief, consider what you were doing at the time. Maybe you were talking to a customer, or working with your team to solve a problem, or strategizing with your boss on how to grow revenue. Whether its relationship building or teamwork or topline strategy, identify what inspires and motivates you and then look for ways to regularly incorporate that into your current role. (Again, your manager is a great person to speak with about this.)Ive always felt passionate about workplace culture and so, at one point in my career when I wasnt feeling p articularly inspired by anything I was working on, I created and implemented a mentoring program that gave young employees exposure to management while allowing experienced individuals a chance to exercise leadership skills. Consider the innovative ways in which you could use your interests to your advantage in the office.3. How Can You Better Connect With Others?Its easy to stick to the cliques that weve developed over time, but wheres the challenge and excitement in that? Encourage yourself to branch out and meet new people. You can still make time to deepen the relationships youve already cultivated, but also make an effort to set up a couple of lunch dates, or simply ask co-workers you dont know well to grab coffee. I once knew a junior-level co-worker who scheduled a 15-minute meeting with all 10 senior managers on the companys sales team. He came out of the experience with better relationships with leadership than most of his peers, and he emerged with a newfound passion for w hat he was doing daily. Taking the time to connect can expose you to new opportunities, eye-opening information, and better relationships. 4. Where Can You Easily Make Changes?Change is rarely easy, so consider starting with surface-level aesthetics. Alter your desk dcor. Purchase small plants. Pin up inspirational artwork and hang photos. After youve made that leap, step deeper into change and reevaluate some of your processes to try and shake up your routine. Do you always start the day one way? Why not try doing something different?After youve made some small strides, see if you can dive all the way in and go bigger and bolder. Identify one area that your co-workers mayve overlooked or dont have time to address and study it in-depth. Become an expert, show off your skills, and see if you havent moved at least a couple of steps past working the daily grind thats been keeping you down. Im not saying that you have to keep doing what youre doing. Again, be koranvers to show your impact dont just say you are a lifelong learner, show your impact and talk about what you learned.Conferences AttendedThat person with the three to five years of experience on their resume have they attended your industries annual convention this year? Last year? Ever? Probably not, but perhaps you did giving you another advantage over the competition.
